Plant Care Guide

Simple, practical advice for keeping your houseplants healthy, thriving, and looking their best.

Watering Basics

Most plant problems come from watering too much or too little.

  • Check soil first: Stick your finger 1-2 inches down. If it's dry, water.
  • Water deeply: Water until it drains from the bottom, then stop.
  • Avoid schedules: Water based on soil dryness, not the calendar.
  • Use room-temperature water: Cold water can shock roots.

Light Requirements Lighting

Light is the number one factor in plant health, more than water or fertilizer.

  • Bright indirect light: Near a window but not in direct sun. Great for most plants.
  • Direct sun: Succulents, cacti, and herbs love it.
  • Low light: Snake plants, pothos, and ZZ plants tolerate it, but grow slower.
  • Rotate plants: Turn them weekly for even growth.

Soil & Repotting Roots

Healthy roots mean a healthy plant. Soil and pot size matter more than most people think.

  • Use the right mix: Succulents need fast-draining soil; tropicals prefer airy mixes.
  • Repot every 1-2 years: Fresh soil restores nutrients and improves drainage.
  • Choose the right pot: Always use pots with drainage holes.
  • Go up one size: 1-2 inches larger is enough. Too big leads to soggy soil.

Humidity & Environment Climate

Some plants thrive in humidity, others do not care much at all.

  • Tropical plants: Prefer 50-60% humidity (ferns, calatheas, monsteras).
  • Dry-air tolerant: Succulents, snake plants, and ZZ plants.
  • Keep away from vents: Heat and AC can dry out leaves.
  • Group plants: They naturally raise humidity together.

Fertilizing Nutrition

Plants do not need much fertilizer, but the right amount helps them thrive.

  • Use a balanced fertilizer: 10-10-10 or 20-20-20 works for most plants.
  • Less is more: Fertilize lightly during spring and summer.
  • Do not fertilize in winter: Plants grow slowly and do not need it.
  • Flush soil occasionally: Prevents salt buildup from fertilizers.

Common Problems Troubleshooting

Most issues have simple fixes once you know what to look for.

  • Yellow leaves: Usually overwatering.
  • Brown tips: Low humidity or inconsistent watering.
  • Drooping: Could be underwatering. Check soil dryness.
  • Leggy growth: Not enough light. Move closer to a window.
