I've never been a big fan of Gary Bettman. He came from the NBA and largely tried to mold hockey in that same generic form rather that maintain it's incredible history. He focuses more on getting games to viewers rather than improving the game that will be viewed. And there have been two work-stoppages in the last ten years.
But when I listen to Gary speak and then I listen to NHL Players Association boss Bob Goodenow speak about the latest impasse, I find Gary to be sound and reasonable and Bob to be disingenuous, smarmy, and not at all interested in what's good for the game.
Goodenow seems to think that his job is to get the most for the players, even if it's in the disinterest of the NHL and the fans. His hard-line, no salary cap stance, will lead to a lengthy lockout. If it lasts long enough, one year, Gary Bettman can invoke the commissioner's impasse clause of the NHL bylaws and essentially dissolve the relationship with the players union.
Why shouldn't he? Bob Goodenow and the players union are not interested in what's best for the game of hockey. Let's cut them out of the mix.
